about

Your Happy Hedgehog

Annika Groebner, BA, MFA, CDS
Here's a little bit about me and why I started this business.
I moved to Nova Scotia (from Toronto) in 2013 so that I could be near the ocean and the friendliest people in Canada! Seriously. I finally felt that I was in an environment that really suited my personality and the kind of life I wanted to lead. So much of that was about the people here and the level of community involvement I could achieve.

My life and studies have mainly been centered on art, parenting and teaching. I still maintain a small art practice but find there is so much more personal satisfaction to be had in giving back to the community and those in need. As we all know, Nova Scotia has one of the most senior populations in Canada and Lunenburg and its County are no exception. In the fall of 2016 I decided to go back to school - to NSCC - for the Community Disability Supports Program in order to certify myself as a care worker. Coursework included a wide spectrum of skills necessary to support people with disabilities (age-related or other). I  possess the patience and compassion to work in this field and decided pretty early on that I wanted to focus on the elderly in order to help them age with as much independence and dignity as possible.

I truly look forward to meeting a diverse and interesting clientele and serving in my community.

Aside from being an artist, I'm also an avid reader of fiction and non-fiction and love film. I have travelled extensively and lived abroad in France, Germany, Greece and Italy. I speak German, French and Italian. My Master's degree was in Interdisciplinary Art, Media and Design, although my interest and research focused on Human Interaction and Embodied Cognition - the study of how the body and mind are connected and together inform how we make meaning.

I stay active by walking my two little Dachshunds (Franny & Hazel) daily, as well as kayaking down here in Blue Rocks. Sometimes I even don my wet suit and get right into the water to boogie board. In winter I skate at the arena with my bevvy of "older" skating buddies. I watch a lot of film and  crochet in my spare time....
